This summer, Hotel Savoy, a Rocco Forte hotel in Florence, invites guests to experience one of Italy’s most anticipated sporting events, the Palio di Siena on August 16, 2019.

This world-famous colourful horse race first took place in 1310 and continues to gallop around the city’s Piazza del Campo every summer.  It is a 90-second bareback horse race in which Siena’s various districts, or contrade, compete neck and neck. The competition is fierce and stakes are high, as the loser is considered to be the contrada whose horse comes second rather than last.

Hotel Savoy’s exclusive experience begins on the day of the Palio with a welcome aperitivo at the hotels’ famous Irene Bistro.  Guests are then whisked-off to Siena in a chauffeured Mercedes for a three-hours guided tour where they can revel in the beauty of the historic city and soak-up the pre-race atmosphere.  Once the Palio begins, guests are invited to cheer the action from private seats with a prime view of the starting line, and finish with a toast to the winning contrada before returning to Hotel Savoy for a relaxing evening in one of the elegantly re-designed rooms or suites.  As an added bonus, a chic Palio di Siena scarf is our gift to take home as a memento.
