See the Glittering Splendour of Faberge
This spring, Hotel Astoria, a Rocco Forte hotel in St Petersburg, is offering guests a rare after-hours tour of the Faberge Museum to see the world’s largest collection of the Imperial Faberge Eggs.
The Faberge Museum was opened in 2013 and is located in one of the most beautiful palaces in St Petersburg, Shuvalov Palace, on the banks of the Fontanka River.
The museum’s collection includes the works of decorative and applied art of Russian masters from the late 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, including world’s largest collection of Fabergé Easter Eggs. Russian businessman and patron Victor Vekselberg bought this collection of Faberge Eggs from the American magnate Malcolm Forbes at a cost of $100 million. Nine Imperial Easter eggs, which form the core of the museum’s collection, were created for the last Russian emperors Alexander III and Nicolas II.
When Faberge was working on his ideas of Easter present, he was always considering the desires and specialities of his client. For example, the Rose Bud Egg by its color and decoration symbolizes the tender feelings of Nicolas II to his spouse – German princess and Russian Empress Alexandra Fedorovna. The surprise inside the egg – the yellow rose bud – is simultaneously a symbol of spring and nature awakening, and a reminder of Alexandra’s motherland – Darmstadt and its famous rosaries.
Hotel Astoria and the Fabergé Museum are the two brightest testimonials to the great renaissance of St Petersburg life in the beginning of 20th century – and 100 years later, not surprisingly, the two brands have found each other once again. The world famous masterpieces of the art of jewellery – Fabergé Easter Eggs – have inspired Executive Pastry Chef of Hotel Astoria Yulia Ivanova to create the beautiful desserts – Fabergé Spring Rose and Fabergé Winter Rose.
