STORY: The resort is named after the great Verdura family which once owned the land where the property lies today. The last Duke of Verdura was a cousin of the renowned Italian writer Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa. A copy of his masterpiece, The Leopard, can be found in every bedroom.
FOUNDERS: Sir Rocco Forte and his sister Olga Polizzi
GENERAL MANAGER: Giacomo Battafarano
RESORT MANAGER: Massimo Moreschini
ARCHITECT: Flavio Albanese
ARCHITECTURE: Verdura Resort fuses strong, modernist, environmentally-sensitive architecture with a design that is both luxurious and firmly rooted in Sicilian culture. Inspired by the spectacular Mediterranean setting, the Italian architect Flavio Albanese has used local colours such as Latin terracotta and ochre, and a variety of textures by mixing local stone, sand and wood. Strong geometrical lines characterize the buildings which recall the design of traditional Sicilian houses.
INTERIOR DESIGN: Olga Polizzi has created a tangible sense of place, a pared-down, contemporary edge and a simplicity that is in keeping with the local culture. In her own words, “My inspiration always starts from the place. Every project follows a different line of thought: I begin by reflecting on what is most suitable for a particular location. The wild, rugged characteristics of Sicily are reflected in our use of strong, squared forms and warm tones. While designing this resort, another fundamental consideration was to create a balance between luxury and environmental concerns. Sicily’s rustic, rugged landscape is reflected in the square, strong forms and the warm colours used. Handpainted ceramics are a regular feature of Sicilian houses and villas and Olga Polizzi has made these a key element in her design for the Verdura Resort where the tiles are handcrafted locally. She has used a 19th-century design as a recurring motif in various forms throughout both the private and public spaces. The bedcovers, lampshades and cushions in the bedrooms and suites, and the walls and soft furnishings in the Bar Granita are all inspired by this motif. Leading Italian companies, such as Paola Lenti, Bonacina, Driade, Flos, Porada, Flexform and Gabbianelli, have contributed to the creation of the resort. Luxurious space, intelligent design, comfort and privacy characterize the 203 rooms at Verdura, all with sea view.
SUSTAINABILITY: Social and environmental responsibility has been made a core feature of the resort, from the architecture of its buildings to its everyday management. Conceived with special attention to eco-friendly features, the resort is equipped with solar panels for the production of hot water, and a water recycling system. Furthermore, there is a no-car policy in the resort in order to preserve the beauty of the landscape. In addition, in 2016-18 the entire exterior lighting system, consisting of 8,300 lightbulbs, was replaced with LED bulbs.
ROOMS AND SUITES: The resort’s 203 elegant rooms and suites, divided into 7 categories, boast stunning sea vistas from private terraces. All rooms are equipped with ample wardrobe space, while the stone-finished bathrooms enjoy natural light and views of the resort’s green areas or attractive winter gardens adorned with citrus trees. Warm Sicilian hues of violet, ochre and scarlet enhance the luxurious atmosphere of the rooms and suites, each one slightly different from the other. Modern dark-wood four-poster beds feature romantic muslin mosquito screens, while cylindrical fabric lampshades provide suffused lighting. The floors are in polished concrete, the bathroom walls are enhanced with mosaics, and the rooms are adorned with colourful local artisan objects such as vases and ceramic tile table tops. The entrance to each room, and the reception area, are decorated with traditional Sicilian bas-reliefs recreated by the Italian company “Recuperando”. Bamboo has been used to create shady areas on the terraces, adding another element of traditional Sicilian craftsmanship.

VERDURA ORGANIC FARM: Set up in 2014 as an expression of our love for local produce and strong ties with the region, the Verdura Organic Farm aims to enhance Sicily’s fruits of the earth and involve guests in an ever more authentic and sustainable experience. The 230-hectare Verdura farm boasts an abundance of fruit trees, including 3047 olives, 3703 oranges, 150 almonds, 150 prickly pears, 120 pomegranates, and 50 lemons. More than 2600 square metres of land are dedicated to our vegetable garden where a wide range of vegetables and herbs are grown according to strict organic farming methods. These include artichokes, aubergines, tomatoes, peppers, melons, chillies, broad beans, rosemary, sage, mint and wild fennel. Nestled in this delightful corner of the resort is the Casina nell’Orto, where the emphasis is on fresh, wholesome ingredients, sustainability and biodiversity. Here, guests can rediscover the joys of authentic food and join our gardener to harvest the herbs and vegetables first hand and transform them into marvellous dishes in the company of our dedicated and highly-knowledgeable chefs. Alternatively, these flavoursome homegrown ingredients can be enjoyed in the comfort of our resort restaurants, or at the Granita Bar in the form of Sicilian-style cocktails.
2014 also marked the beginning of our own extra virgin olive oil production. Local olive varieties (Cerasuola, Biancolilla and Nocellara) are hand-picked and cold-pressed within a few hours of harvesting in order to maximise the organoleptic properties of the oil. Verdura’s extra virgin olive oil has an intense bright green colour and a harmonious bouquet of typical local aromas: orange blossom, artichoke, mint and basil. It has been such a success that we have taken it beyond the confines of the Verdura Resort to be used in every kitchen and restaurant in the Rocco Forte Hotels group.

GOLF DIRECTOR: António Castelo
GOLF COURSES: A keen sportsman with a lifelong passion for golf, Sir Rocco was inspired to develop a five star golfing experience. The exceptional course at Verdura was created in collaboration with renowned golf course designer Kyle Phillips.
Host venue of the Rocco Forte Sicilian Open in 2017 and 2018, Verdura provides golf on a grand scale, with the personal service and attention to detail more usually associated with a private club. The golf courses are laid out with the finest grasses and are maintained to the highest level.
An 18-hole championship course and a 9-hole par-3 course (913m) meander across terrain that undulates from the mountain foothills down to the Mediterranean. A double ended driving range (65m wide), and a clubhouse with golf shop, bar, restaurant and boutiques, complete the golfing experience. For those approaching the game for the first time there is a Golf Academy offering excellent practice facilities led by a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) team.
ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT: Because of the scarcity of water resources in Sicily, and the quantities required to maintain the resort’s golf courses, a water-recycling system has been installed. A further measure introduced to save water has been the conversion of the lawn around the golf course into decorative rock gardens. Because of these and other initiatives, in 2014 the Verdura Resort received the environmental "Committed to Green" award, a European project supported by the Italian Golf Federation and endorsed by the Italian Ministry of the Environment. The project provides guidelines for the adoption of eco-sustainable policies on the golf course, and aims to raise awareness of environmental issues amongst golf clubs and players.
Awarded in the "biodiversity" category, Verdura Resort has implemented a renaturalisation programme by restoring over 70,000 different species of native Sicilian plants and shrubs.
In particular, in collaboration with the Department of Botany of the University of Palermo, the resort has engaged in the creation and naturalisation of wetlands, which provide a stopover site for migratory birds and a nesting place for waterfowl.
SPA DIRECTOR: Luciano Porcu
PHILOSOPHY: Set amid olive and citrus groves, Verdura Spa is one of Europe’s most advanced luxury wellness centres, offering a comprehensive holistic approach to health, wellbeing and the body. The wealth of fitness programmes and treatments on offer includes the use of traditional Sicilian products to enhance the experience.
The Verdura Spa philosophy is based on Sebastian Kneipp’s five pillars: water, herbs, exercise, nutrition and lifestyle. The harmonious combination of these elements contributes to personal wellness, leading to the process of self-healing which is enhanced by the wisdom of Sicilian traditions, natural products and local aromas, and by our team of therapists and health professionals.
Housed in a group of pavilions around an open-air courtyard, the 4,000 square metre spa has spacious treatment rooms for individuals and suites for couples. It also boasts a 20-metre indoor swimming pool, a steam room, Finnish and infrared saunas, a fitness studio, ample relaxation areas and a hair and beauty salon. The spa’s showpiece is the outdoor thalassotherapy circuit consisting of four pools, distinguished by different temperatures, varying saline densities, and different mineral and microorganism content. The circuit involves passing from the warmest to the coldest pool, spending between 10 and 15 minutes in each one. As well as encouraging deep relaxation, the circuit provides a revitalising, antimicrobial and cleansing action on the skin. Thalassotherapy stimulates vascular and lymphatic circulation, helps eliminate toxins, encourages breathing and oxygenation, and is highly beneficial to the musculoskeletal system.
To complete the pampering experience, our Spa Bar offers a choice of light meals, smoothies, juices, infusions and therapeutic tisanes, served on its terrace overlooking the surrounding hills.
SPORTS AND FITNESS: The fitness area has a 170m2 Gym, equipped with the latest Technogym equipment, as well as a fitness studio with daily classes in the 20-metre indoor pool.. Our Fitness Team will help guests meet their exercise goals and reach their full potential.
But training is not just limited to our indoor facilities: some of our fitness classes, such as Sunset and Sunrise Yoga, take place outdoors. In addition, there are jogging, trekking and cycling trails that meander through the resort’s olive, orange and lemon groves.
The resort has a 2km private beach with a Water Sport Centre that offers state-of-the-art equipment rental for great water sport activities such as wake and flyboarding, windsurfing, etc. A football pitch (that was chosen by the German national team as its training camp for the 2010 World Cup) and a Tennis Academy with 6 clay courts complete the resort’s sport facilities.
